Jane Duncan

Jane Duncan

I paint views through rooms, landscapes often based on my father’s Scottish homeland, or Still Life with deep intense colours.

I live mostly in the Wairarapa, where I wake to a vista of the Tararua Ranges and sheep grazing.

But it is the light which is so magical. In the mornings the sheep’s backs can be bathed in a golden glow, in the evening the mountains behind become shades of green, grey, mauve and blue.

For an artist it is the perfect place to paint. Inspiration is all around me.

I began painting properly, instead of dabbling, in 2013 as an aid to recovery from a period of serious illness.

Under the tutorage of Jane Sinclair, I discovered “dark and light.”

I followed my love of the work of the Old Masters, so rich in colour and photo realism, painting firstly in acrylics and now mostly in oils.

A challenge by Jane to paint in the style of the Scottish Colourists, with their intense colours, looser brushstrokes and subtle modulation of light and shade has led me to where I am today.

Completely absorbed in my art, I paint views through rooms, landscapes often based on my father’s Scottish homeland, or Still Life with deep intense colours.

Dark and light, light and shade.

Painting takes me out of myself. It is my joy, great love and addiction.

The journey of an artist is a huge adventure.

Come on it with me.

Jane Duncan.
